DRDC Mission Statement

DRDC’s overall mission is to strengthen the capacity of research, documentation and local civil society action on issues relevant to peaceful resolution of armed conflicts and the associated human rights and humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of western Sudan.

DRDC contributes an impartial experience and knowledge to tackle the root causes of armed conflicts in Darfur, propose measures for their resolution and support efforts to end the ongoing armed conflict in Darfur through negotiated peaceful settlement and to avert recurrence of such conflicts in the future. This objective is realized through cooperation with indigenous civil society partners who share our vision to bring peace, restore the rule of law, advocate adherence to the concepts of democratic governance, liberty, accountability, equality and non-discrimination. DRDC devotes special attention to issues of social justice, equality and even evelopment in all parts of Sudan. DRDC and its local partners use their knowledge of the history of Darfur and the social and cultural beliefs of its people for their common good.

In its work, DRDC is guided by its firm belief that prevention of the commission of massive human rights violations and atrocities such as crimes against humanity, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, genocide and other similar carnage in any region of the world is a key strategy. Prevention is the only viable guarantee for the safety and security of person and the well-being of the people in Darfur and elsewhere in Sudan. Effective, resourceful and strong civil society structures at the local level are important components in this respect. Involvement of such mechanisms will play a positive role advocating preventive strategies thus saving the lives and properties of the people of the region from destruction and sparing the world community of spending scarce financial resources. DRDC supports genuine initiatives targeting the realization of similar objectives being they proposed by governments or by national, regional and/or international organisations.
